Cube Roots and beyond

A cube root is an operation to determine the three same factors of a number. These factors multiplied by themselves lead to the number under the root sign with a little 3 outside the root sign.

The third root of 27 is 3, for [image].

 

You factor the number and look for three equal factors. This factor can be put before the cube root sign.

 

Higher roots can easily be evaluated by the formula:

The root is a broken exponent. In the numerator you see the exponent of the number. In the denominator you detect the n-th root. With this notation you can evaluate complicated roots.
